The other day someone asked Dr. Gavin Parker of Pincher Creek, Alberta what kind of doctor he was. “A rural general practitioner,” he replied. “Oh, JUST a GP,” was the response back. Dr. Parker has learned to let comments like that roll off his back, but he questions whether those asking the question really understand all that a rural GP does.

“Throughout my whole university career, I think the job that I wanted to do was rural,” says Dr. Nicole Cardinal. “And coming back to Saddle Lake knowing that they do need staff to work in the Health Centre, knowing that we’re always struggling rurally to have physicians … I think this has always been a job for me.” Dr. Cardinal is a family physician practicing on the Saddle Lake Cree Nation in Alberta, Canada. Originally from the community, Dr. Cardinal came back home after spending some time in Edmonton, living and study at the University of Alberta.
